OUR PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

At Dunn Physical Therapy & Pilates Center, we have seen first hand the benefits that the Pilates Method offers to patients and non-patients alike. We are committed to offering a quality Pilates program that promotes healing through movement.

Decreased Class Size, Increased Attention…
At DunnPilates, we feel strongly that small classes are the best way for you to experience the Pilates method. Since Pilates exercises require precision and control, it is important that you have necessary corrections made to enhance your understanding of each exercise. Our instructors are able to cue you when you need it, in an effort to promote proper technique and optimize results. We invite you to experience the difference that this will make in your personal comprehension of the Pilates method and your ability to achieve the full benefits of your workout.

Personal Attention

We promote personal attention by limiting TheraPilates classes to four participants, and general mat classes to six. Small classes allow our instructors to make individual corrections to promote proper technique and maximize safety. All of our instructors are trained in modifying exercises with regard to medical history and skill level. Since many of our classes are taught by physical therapists, this adds an additional benefit for those recovering from injury.

What is Pilates?
Pilates is an invigorating method of exercise focusing on three main principles: flexibility, strength and control. The Pilates method of exercise utilizes nontraditional pieces of equipment, combined with floor exercises, for a body-transforming workout. The initial focus of the method is to strengthen the abdominal and hip muscles known in Pilates as the "Powerhouse." A good instructor will work on each individual body's specific needs within the framework of the method.

Pilates for Patients…

We offer Pilates classes and private sessions to our patients as a compliment to your physical therapy treatment. We have incorporated the Pilates method into the rehabilitation process as it has proven to be highly effective in reaching your physical therapy goals.

TheraPilates Private sessions are 30 minutes of one-on-one instruction with a physical therapist and/or certified Pilates instructor. These sessions will introduce you to Pilates exercises, giving you the personal attention required to understand the technique. We are also able to modify each exercise with respect to your individual goals and abilities.

TheraPilates classes are 45-minute classes limited to four participants. These group classes are for patients who have graduated from TheraPilates private sessions, but are still working toward specific therapy goals. These classes are taught with precision and modifications that promote your continued healing through movement. TheraPilates classes are instructed by either a physical therapist and/or certified Pilates instructor.

Once you have completed physical therapy and achieved your goals for recovery, you are able to continue participation in Pilates classes at an increased challenge. We encourage you to continue with Pilates as part of their wellness regiment, as a safe and effective way to exercise.

Mat Classes
We offer mat classes on a variety of levels. When performed correctly, even the most advanced Pilates student should still experience a challenging workout in a Beginner level class. Regardless of your level of fitness, Pilates mat classes offer a rewarding environment to condition your body to your desired level of wellness. Our public mat classes have a maximum of four participants, while our TheraPilates classes have a maximum of four participants.

We offer a variety of class types for a variety of levels.

TheraPilates Classes- Healing through movement.
This program specifically utilizes Pilates exercises to increase strength, flexibility, alignment, and balance in a safe and controlled environment. These 45-minute classes can be scheduled before or after your appointment with your Physical Therapist. A licensed physical therapist and/or Certified Pilates Instructor will instruct these classes. The instructor will discuss your specific diagnosis, potential problem areas, and treatment goals with your primary therapist. Exercises will be modified according to individual needs.

Beginner Mat- An introduction to the Pilates Method.
This 50 minute class will begin your journey to establish your core and make the powerhouse connection. You will learn the basics of the Pilates workout, but it can also be used as a great compliment to an intermediate workout.

Intermediate Mat- For those already familiar with Pilates Method.
This 50 minute class offers intermediate instruction, which relies on a participants awareness of the Pilates method. Intermediate Mat challenges your body's core, as well as flexibility and strength, on a deeper level.

Props Class- An intermediate workout...with a twist!
This intermediate level class challenges participants by using Pilates Props- Magic Circles, bands, and even the exercise ball! This is the perfect class for those looking to spice up their Pilates routine.

Tower Class- Climb on to this apparatus for an increased challenge!
This 50 minute class is limited to three participants and utilizes the Pilates Towers to provide a medium between traditional mat class and equipment sessions. The Tower assists participants in finding their powerhouse and focuses on individual needs.

Equipment
Private Lessons
We offer private lessons utilizing any combination of the traditional Pilates equipment. Our instructors will take you through a Pilates workout with your specific goals and abilities in mind. These private lessons are customized for you and introducing your body to the challenge of apparatus work.

Tower Classes
We also offer Tower classes for up to three participants at a time. These classes are a combination of mat and equipment work, offering you the benefits of group dynamics, with the challenge of equipment work.

Getting Started
If you are a current patient at Dunn Physical Therapy, you can begin participation in our Pilates programs with a referral from your primary physical therapist. All patients are required to schedule a 30 minute TheraPilates private as your introduction to the Pilates method of exercise. When your instructor and primary therapist determine it is appropriate, you can then progress to our 45 minute TheraPilates classes. Once you have reached your physical therapy goals, you may continue enjoying additional Pilates classes with an increased challenge.

If you are not a patient, we welcome you to get started through a private lesson or Beginner mat class. First time clients have the opportunity to take an initial lesson or class at an introductory rate. Packages of blocks are available for you to purchase in increments of 5, 10, 20 and 30. Each type of class has a block value which will be marked off the package with each session by your instructor. This system allows maximal flexibility for you to experience the full range of class types. You must schedule for classes and lessons in advance with our receptionists.
